Syndesis Launches RuralMed-AI Pilot under SMART ERA Open Call
Syndesis has launched RuralMed-AI, an intelligent healthcare pilot selected under the SMART ERA – 1st Open Call for Pilot Add-Ons.
RuralMed-AI addresses a critical challenge across Europe’s rural and remote regions: how to support general practitioners working with limited connectivity, high workloads, and fragmented patient information. Building on Syndesis’ iWelli healthcare ecosystem and EdgeMind AI platform, the pilot delivers an AI-powered, edge-enabled decision-support system designed specifically for rural healthcare settings.
The solution introduces three core innovations:
- AI-driven triage and prioritization, supporting GPs in clinical decision-making and visit planning
- LLM-based patient summarization, transforming fragmented medical records into concise, multilingual insights
- Offline-first, edge-enabled operation, ensuring continuity of care, data sovereignty, and GDPR compliance even in low-connectivity areas
Unlike cloud-dependent telemedicine solutions, RuralMed-AI performs AI inference locally at the edge, enabling real-time performance while keeping sensitive medical data within the region. The pilot will be deployed in rural areas such as the Devetaki Plateau, in close collaboration with local healthcare professionals and municipalities.
Aligned with SMART ERA and the broader European Digital Health Strategy, RuralMed-AI demonstrates how ethical, human-centric AI can reduce healthcare inequalities, improve efficiency for rural doctors, and create a scalable model for digital health innovation across Europe.
